Rooted in Community
At Overseas Farm Private Limited, responsibility starts with the people who grow what we process. Long before a shipment leaves our facility in Purnea, it passes through the hands of farmers across the Seemanchal region, and how we treat those hands matters to us as much as the quality of the produce itself.
We buy from farming communities across the Seemanchal, Koshi and Mithila belts of North Bihar, land renewed every year by alluvial sediment carried down from the Himalayas. Sourcing directly, without layers of middlemen, means farmers see a fairer share of what their harvest is worth, and we receive produce that has not lost freshness sitting in transit.
A large share of India's fruit and vegetable harvest never reaches a buyer. It spoils in transport, in storage, or on the farm itself, simply because there was nowhere to sell it in time. We built our processing base close to the source specifically to close that gap. The sooner produce reaches us after harvest, the less of it goes to waste, and the more a farmer earns from the same field.
Our processing operations create work in and around Purnea, from field collection to sorting, processing and packing. We see this as part of the same responsibility as fair sourcing: a processing facility in a farming region should put money back into that region, not simply pull produce out of it.
The fertility of the Himalayan alluvial plains is not something we take for granted. We encourage sourcing practices among the farmers we work with that protect soil health and water use, because a depleted field helps no one, least of all the families who depend on it season after season.
This page will grow as our programs do. If you represent a farmer organisation, NGO or research body working on rural livelihoods or sustainable agriculture in Bihar and would like to explore a partnership with O Farm, we would like to hear from you.
