Kishanganj is Bihar's pineapple district. Its farms sit on the Himalayan Alluvial Plains in the far north-east of the state, where warm, humid summers and rain-fed soils suit the crop well. Plantings also spread into neighbouring Purnea and Katihar, and growers across eastern India favour varieties such as Kew and Queen.
Kishanganj is also right next to Purnea, where O Farm is based. That matters more with pineapple than with most fruit. A pineapple does not get any sweeter after it is cut from the plant, so it has to be harvested when mature and processed before it starts to soften and ferment.
We buy directly from farmers and FPOs in the area and move the fruit to processing within a short drive. It is washed, peeled, cored and pulped or crushed while it still has the bright, tangy flavour of fresh pineapple, then packed for storage and shipment.

The O Farm Difference
The pineapple farms of Kishanganj are a short drive from our Purnea base. Fruit is on the processing line soon after harvest, with little time to bruise or overripen.
Since pineapple stops developing sugar once cut, we ask growers to harvest only fully mature fruit. Picking early would leave the pulp sour and thin.
Fruit is checked for ripeness, damage and rot before peeling. Crowns, skin and hard core are removed, leaving only the flesh for pulping.
We deal with farmers and FPOs without a chain of traders in between. Payment is linked to quality, so growers are rewarded for bringing in good fruit.
Lots are recorded against the district and grower group they came from, from the farm right through to the shipment.
Processing follows internationally recognised food safety standards. Each lot is tested for Brix, acidity, colour and foreign matter before release.
