From the ponds and wetlands of North Bihar
Makhana growers wading through a Mithila pond, harvesting pods by hand at the Makhana Orchards of Mithila

Makhana, or fox nut, is the seed of Euryale ferox, a water lily that grows in the ponds and low wetlands of North Bihar. Bihar accounts for the large majority of India's makhana, commonly put at around 85 to 90 per cent, and most of it comes from Darbhanga, Madhubani, Purnea, Katihar, Kishanganj, Araria, Saharsa and Supaul. Mithila Makhana was given a GI tag in 2022. For O Farm, based in Purnea, this is the crop we know best.
Getting makhana from pond to pack is slow, skilled work. Divers, many of them from the Mallah community, gather the seeds from the pond bed by hand. The seeds are washed, sun-dried and sorted by size, then roasted in iron pans and struck with wooden mallets so the hard shell cracks and the white kernel puffs out. A good popper can tell by sound and feel when a batch is ready. Around Purnea, a growing number of farmers now raise makhana in shallow flooded fields as well as traditional ponds.
We buy from these growers and their FPOs directly, and we grade, pack and ship from the same region. That keeps the chain short, gives farmers a price linked to the quality of their pops, and lets us tell buyers exactly where a lot was grown.
The O Farm Difference
Our office is in Purnea, inside the main growing districts. We buy from ponds and fields we can visit, from farmers who have worked this crop for generations.
Every lot is sorted by diameter into clear suta grades before packing. You receive the size band you ordered, with fewer broken pieces and less mixing between grades.
Popped makhana picks up humidity quickly and loses its crunch. We check moisture before packing and seal lots in moisture-proof bags so they reach you crisp.
We deal with growers and FPOs directly, with fewer middlemen taking a cut. Farmers are paid on the grade they deliver, which gives them a reason to bring in their best pops.
Each lot is recorded against its sourcing area and farmer group. If your customers ask where their makhana came from, you will have an answer.
Sorting, grading and packing follow internationally recognised food safety standards, with checks for foreign matter, broken pops, colour and moisture.
Specifications are indicative and can be adjusted to your requirement. Final parameters are confirmed in writing with each order.
